The Guardians of Time ("Wächter der Zeit" in German) are ghost-like and mystical-looking sculptures created by the Austrian light artist Manfred Kielnhofer. During the recent 12-day Festival of Lights in Berlin that ended October 20, the Guardians were exhibited outside at lighted installations throughout the city which included famous buildings, monuments, tourist spots, commercial facilities, and even waterways and parks. Normally, the Guardians of Time can be viewed in museums and exhibitions in Europe, but in Berlin the figures toured the city at night during the festival when the city was wrapped in rainbow-colored lights from sunset until midnight. The festival is an annual event which started nine years ago that brings in thousands of tourists to the city and many visitors who have become die-hard fans. A Berliner I met one night told me he took 12 extra days of vacation leave so he can photograph every night without the stress of work the next day. Fortunately, he brought his wife with him so there is no stress there also. I gave him a high five!
